1463559 Comminuting apparatus S P RUDZINSKI 4 Feb 1974 [5 Feb 1973] 05101/74 Heading B2A Comminuting apparatus 10 Fig. 1 comprises a rotor 12 formed by axially-spaced screening rings or bars 31 or progressively increasing diameter in the direction of flow of the liquid, removable cutters 17 on the rotor, coacting stationary cutters 18, a drive means 14 including a chain and sprocket to drive the rotor positioned out of the path of liquid flow (viz a flow of sewage) means to support the screening rings or bars including a shaft 21 and means in the form of radial ribs 29 Fig. 4 extending outwardly therefrom and having steps 30 for positioning each of the bars 31 concentrically of the shaft, and means to support the shaft including a base member 22 Fig. 2 and support members 24, 25 extending upwardly from the base 22 and carrying front and rear portions of the shaft 21 to permit the shaft to rotate on an axis parallel to the direction of liquid flow. As described the screen bars 31 may have cylindrical outer surfaces as in Fig. 10 or frusto-conical surfaces Fig. 6 with a cam arrangement for locking. Slots 37 in the outer surfaces of the bars receive cutter bits 17 which may be reversible and made of hardened steel. The rotor is surrounded by an arrangement of baffles and shields which directs liquid flow and provides ready access to the mechanism. These include a sliding panel 56 Fig. 1 and a hinged top panel 65 which also provides a safety guard and a yielding lid to relieve over pressure. The channel for sewage flow may be rectangular, semi-cylindrical or V- shaped with corresponding shaped baffles. The stationary cutters 18 are held on a support shelf 77, Fig. 1, and may have the forms shown in Figs. 9 or 10. The L-shaped bit of Fig. 9 coacts with two sides of the rotor bit and is reversible. In Fig. 10 the cutting edges have the foot of the L projecting from the opposite side of the bit 18B rather than from the same side. The bits are protected by a shield 83. Fig. 9. A distributing and cutting arm 87 is mounted at the front of the rotor.
