Abstract

1463556 Embossed card reader ADDRESSOGRAPH MULTIGRAPH CORP 1 Feb 1974 [2 Feb 1973] 04849/74 Heading G4M An embossed card reader having either a floating read head (capable of rotating about different axes to compensate for variable positioning of a card, Fig. 1a, not shown) or a fixed head (Fig. 2, not shown) has a roller beneath and supporting a card and pivotally mounted probes 37. The probes have, partway along their length, feeders 34 arranged so that their card contacting surfaces are situated between the non-embossed and the embossed surfaces of the card so that they do not contact the embossed surfaces. The head has two guides 33 having inclined leading edges engaging the top and bottom edges of the embossed indicia to correctly position the indicia beneath the feelers, the head being slidable against a restraining spring on bars 29 (or on bar 22, Fig. 1a, not shown). The ends of the probes 37 are arranged to interrupt light beams passing between light emitting diodes 44 and photo detectors 43. The light beams may be restricted by slots in plate 45. The feelers have wider tips on the two end and middle probes than on the two other probes to compensate for variations in characters in the Farrington 7B font.
