Abstract
1463234 X-ray diagnostic apparatus DIGITAL INFORMATION SCIENCE CORP 14 Feb 1975 [15 Feb 1974] 6395/75 Headings H4F and H5R Apparatus for examining a slice of a body by orbiting in incremental steps an X-ray source 96 and associated detector 98 around the body, and between each such orbital step laterally moving the source and detector across the body, the resulting absorption output signals being fed to a computer for processing to thereby derive a pictorial representation of the body slice. The apparatus comprises a vertical frame 20 having an opening therethrough of a size sufficiently large to permit a patient supported on a table to move therethrough. A carrier frame 60 having an opening co-extensive with the opening in frame 20 is supported on frame 20 and is rotated relative thereto around the patient, the source 96 and detector 98 being mounted on a third frame 80 which is movable transversely in the plane of frame 60 to effect the above lateral scanning action. The frame 20, and thus also frames 60 and 80 carried thereby, may be tilted about axis 21 relative to the patient so that slices of the patient other than vertical slices may be examined. This tilting is effected by adjustable bars interconnecting the top of the frame 20 with the top of a fixed frame 12 (Fig. 5, not shown) and when the frame 20 is tilted the table carrying the patient is automatically lowered. The table, or rather a stretcher, carrying the patient may be incrementally moved to thereby accurately locate the patient relative to the source and detector, the stretcher having a rack formed in its bottom side which engages with a stepping motor on the table (Fig. 5, not shown). Counterbalance weights 70a and 70b are provided on frame 60 which are moved in the opposite directions to the source and detector as the frame 80 (and thus the source and detector) are transversely moved across the patient. The apparatus also includes a shutter arrangement which interrupts the X-ray beam from source 96 until such time as the patient approaches the beam (Figs. 11A-11B, not shown), the shutter being actuated when a light beam is interrupted by a band of X-ray transparent material which is opaque to the light that is wrapped around the patient's body or head.
