Abstract

1463096 Automatic control of position V G CHEPELEV N N GRINCHENKO J M GOLDSHTEIN D L SHVARTS N P FETISENKO and V N GRINCHENKO 9 Aug 1974 35232/74 Heading G3R [Also in Division E1] The rotational position of an earth boring implement 10 with respect to the vertical plane containing the borehole axis is controlled automatically in response to differences between measured and desired values for borehole azimuth and inclination. These quantities are measured by in-hole electronic devices 1, 2 (not described) and comparison is made by magnetic amplifiers 3, 4 (also Fig. 2, not shown) or in a bridge circuit. The arrangement is such that 3 and 4 produce sinusoidal voltages, one of which is phase displaced 90 degrees from the other, whose magnitude represents the error, and these are applied to a resolver 8 which operates a motor driven potentiometer Fig. 3, (not shown),or which comprises a pair of transformers with phase sensitive rectifiers, to provide a desired rotary position signal. This is compared in a bridge circuit 11 with a signal representative of actual rotational position (measured by a rotary transformer in the boring implement) and any difference drives a position correcting motor 13.
