Abstract

1462997 IC engines - pre-combustion chambers YAMAHA HATSUDOKI KK 10 April 1974 [12 April 1973 30 Nov 1973 14 Dec 1973] 15827/74 Heading F1B The invention relates to a four-stroke I.C. engine of the spark ignition type comprising a piston and cylinder assembly, an intake passage controlled by a mushroom-shaped intake valve, an exhaust passage controlled by a mushroomshaped exhaust valve, the intake passage being curved in the vicinity of the intake port, the cavity in the cylinder head which defines in part the combustion chamber being formed with a pocket or recess in the region of and open to the associated intake port corresponding to the outer side of the curved portion of the intake passage, a spark-plug being located in the recess. The engine shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3 comprises an inlet passage 6 for air/fuel mixture, the inlet port 7 being controlled by a valve 10, an exhaust passage 8 the exhaust port 9 of which is controlled by a valve 11, the combustion space 5 being defined in part by a cavity 3A formed in the cylinder head 3. The intake passage 6 is of curved form and a recess 12 is formed in the wall of the cavity 3A of the cylinder head being located adjacent the intake passage and port 7; the recess is defined at its lower side by a wall 14, and having an inlet side 13A and an outlet side 13B; a sparking plug 15 is located with its points in the recess. The arrangement is such that when a weak fuel/air mixture is supplied through the curved intake passage 6, fuel droplets tend to be flung outwardly towards the outer wall of the passage so that a rich mixture is supplied into the recess for ignition by the sparkplug. In a further embodiment a web (16) extends across the recess between the inlet and outlet openings 13A, 13B. The engine shown in Fig. 6 is of the side-valve type, the recess 12 in the cylinder head 3 being defined by an inner wall 14 and by a web 16 and having an inlet 13A and an outlet 13B. The intake passage 6 is of curved form the fuel droplets being flung towards the outer wall of the passage so that a rich fuel/air mixture passes into the recess 12 for ignition by the spark-plug 15. In Fig. 9 the recess 12 is again defined by a lower wall 14, a rich mixture flowing into the recess from the curved intake passage 6 as before; a further intake passage 18 controlled by an inlet valve 19 opens into the recess 12 adjacent the spark-plug 15, a rich mixture being supplied through the passage 18. In Fig. 11 the recess 12 is defined by a lower wall 14 and a web 16 and has an inlet 13A through which a rich fuel/air mixture enters from the curved inlet passage 6, also an outlet 13B. An additional spark-plug is provided diametrally opposite the plug 15.
