Abstract

146,231. United Filters Corporation, (Assignees of Salisbury, O. J.). May 24, 1917, [Convention date]. Rotary filters.-A series of rotary disk suction filters are mounted on a hollow shaft, each disk dipping into a separate narrow tank containing the liquid to be filtered. The filtrate is discharge through passages in the shaft and means are provided for spraying the disks with wash-water and for scraping off solid matter deposited on the disks. As shown, the disks are built up of segments each segment comprising an outer ring 18, Fig. 5, flattened pipes 19, 19<1>, and a plate of woven wire or other foraminous material, covered with suitable fabric 20. Rods 5 are screwed into the shaft 10 and clamping plates 7 on the outer ends of these rods hold the segments in position, pressing nipples 18<1> on the pipes 19 into recesses in the shaft 10. The recesses communicate with longitudinal passages 2 in the shaft. At the end of the shaft is fixed a valve 40, Fig. 6, having longitudinal passages 44, corresponding to the passages 2, and lateral ports 45 which, as the shaft and valve rotate deliver successively to filtrate and washwater outlets in the valve casing. The washwater is sprayed on to the disks by pipes 55. Scrapers 29 fixed to the edges of the tanks 25 remove the solid matter from the disks directing it against inclined plates 30, Fig. 3, from which it falls through the spaces between the tanks to the hopper 31. A form of scraper 29 having inclined fingers as shown in Fig. 13 is preferably used. Below the scrapers on either side of each tank are slotted pipes through which the material to be treated is delivered to the filters from a pipe 37. The tanks 25 are supported on beams 15 and are forced into position and maintained there by means of screws 27. Pulp from the bottoms of the tanks may be circulated by a pump to return through the main supply pipe.
