1461767 Seaming non-metallic sheet material; laminates IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 4 Feb 1974 [12 Feb 1973] 6795/73 Headings B5K and B5N A transversely reinforced band of thermoplastic organic material is produced by treating an edge of at least two superimposed sections of a band of thermoplastic organic material, which includes longitudinally extending fibre or filamentary yarn reinforcements the axes of which are parallel to the treated edge, to cause localized adherence at this edge, and moving the sections into one plane about the adhered edge, i.e. using this edge as a hinge. The sections of a length equal to the required width of the transversely reinforced band are cut from the longitudinally reinforced band. Cutting may be effected so that the transverse reinforcements will lie either at a right or an obtuse angle to the longitudinal edge of the completed band. The treatment to effect adherence at one edge of two superimposed sections may be effected by an electrically-heated metal strip or heated rotary or guillotine knife which simultaneously trims the edges. The blade surface may be treated or coated with silicone or polytetrafluoroethylene to prevent the thermoplastic material sticking thereto. In an example, a plurality of cut sections are superimposed one on the other in a pile, alternate junctions at the edge which is to be heated being interleaved with a strip of non-thermoplastic or non-stick material, e.g. cellulose paper, to prevent adhesion at these junctions. The treated pile is opened out to form the band. Specified thermoplastic organic materials are low and high density polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride, polyurethane based upon a polyester or polyether, a polyester, a polyamide, synthetic rubber and natural rubber in the partially or unvulcanized state. These materials may be in solid or cellular forms. Specified reinforcements are staple fibre or filamentary yarns of a polyester, a polyamide, glass, cotton, and regenerated or chemically modified cellulose. A composite band having both transverse and longitudinal fibrous reinforcements is made by laminating together a transversely reinforced band of the present invention and a band of thermoplastic organic material having longitudinal fibrous reinforcements.
