Abstract

1461537 Measuring solid flow-rate in a slurry ELLICOTT MACHINE CORP 1 May 1974 [7 June 1973] 19012/74 Addition to 1414797 Heading G1R The solids flow-rate in a slurry moving through a pipe-line having a pair of vertical legs 16, 18 joined by a U-bend 14 is determined by optimizing the positions of taps 24, 26, 28 in the U-bend, first leg 16 and second leg 18 respectively so that the pressures at taps 26, 28 are equal to each other both for water and a known specific gravity slurry flowing in the pipe-line, measuring at 54 the pressure differential between the average pressure at taps 26, 28 and the pressure at tap 24 when unknown specific gravity slurry is flowing in the pipe-line and converting the pressure differential into a first signal representing specific gravity, measuring at 74 the pressure differential at taps 58, 60 in a horizontal plane through the U-bend and converting this pressure differential into a second signal which is a function of slurry velocity and slurry specific gravity, converting at 77 the second signal into a third signal which is a function of slurry velocity, and combining the first and third signals at X to produce a fourth signal representing solids flow-rate. Each of the taps 24, 26, 28, 58 and 60 is provided with a flow of purge water via a regulator valve 44, a flowmeter 42 and a respective non-return valve 36, 38, 40, 66, 68.
