Abstract

1461277 Depth measuring devices for divers E T SKINNER & CO Ltd 14 Jan 1975 [19 Oct 1973 15 Nov 1973] 48888/73 and 53101/73 Heading G1A In an electronic device for use by a diver for measuring the depth, or variations in depth of a dive, a pressure sensitive diaphragm 2 is connected to a pair of crossed diffraction gratings 4 so that relative movement causes a magnified movement in the MoirÚ fringes formed by the gratings 4. The gratings are illuminated by a lamp 5 and the relative movement of the MoirÚ fringes is sensed by two photo-cells 6 and 7. The output of one or the other of the photo-cells is fed to an "up-down" counter 8 in dependence on a condition sensing device (not shown) which examines the MoirÚ fringes to determine the relative movement and to tell if the depth is being increased or decreased. Thus the counter 8 is caused to count up or down in dependence upon the depth variations. The accumulated count is converted into a binary coded decimal by a readout device 9 which supplies an accumulating register 10 that supplies a display logic circuit 11 feeding a light emitting diode display 12. The components 8-11 are part of a greater integrated circuit powered by batteries 14 and supplied with pulses from an oscillator 15 to represent the passage of time. A key board 16 can be used to actuate an algorithm built into the circuit to cause the display to indicate the depth, or time underwater, or a function of the depth and the time. In a further embodiment Fig. 2 (not shown) a shift register is used instead of the accumulating register 10, thereby storing the data indicative of the variations in depth with the time. After the dive, the apparatus may then be plugged into a readout device which can operate a pen recorder to produce a graph of the depth of dive plotted against time.
