Abstract

1461262 Sulphurized monocyclic olefins ETHYL COOPER Ltd 9 Jan 1974 [10 Jan 1973] 1410/73 Heading C2C [Also in Division C5] The invention comprises an oil-soluble, metal free, phosphorus-free sulphurized olefin prepared by sulphurizing with elemental sulphur a monocyclic olefin containing from 7 to 12 C atoms in the ring and at least 2 ethylenically unsaturated double bonds in the ring. The sulphurization may be carried out in the presence of from 1 to 25 molar per cent of a solubilizing agent. Specified solubilizing agents are dialkyl maleates, alkyl methacrylates, alkenyl succinic acids or anhydrides, polyisobutenyl succinimides, alkenoic acids and olefins which are conjugated or non-conjugated. The reaction may be carried out in the presence of catalysts, for example amines or dimercaptothiadiazole derivatives. The sulphurized olefins may contain residual ethylenically unsaturated double bonds which may be removed by reaction with compounds which react with ethylenically unsaturated double bonds such as mercaptans, phenols, thiophenols, carboxylic acids and conjugated olefins. This latter reaction may also be carried out prior to sulphurization. Examples are given wherein the cyclic olefins sulphurized are cycloocta-1,5-diene and cyclododeca-1,5,9- triene. They are useful as lubricant additives.
