Abstract

1460696 Wood-plastic materials MOSKOV EXPERIMENTAL FABRIKA BAYANOV IM SOVETARMII 28 Feb 1975 8404/75 Headings C3P and C3G [Also in Divisions D1 and G5] Wood-plastic materials are prepared by first irradiating wood with γ-rays from a Co<SP>60</SP> source in a total dose of from 2 to 100 Mrad, then impregnating the wood with at least one vinyl monomer in liquid or gaseous form, and thereafter polymerizing the impregnated monomer(s) by irradiating the wood with γ-rays from a Co<SP>60</SP> source in a total dose of from 1 to 30 Mrad. The first irradiation step is preferably effected in an inert gas medium, e.g. nitrogen or argon. The monomer may be methyl methacrylate, styrene, methyl acrylate, acrylonitrile or vinyl acetate, used in either liquid or vapour form; it may be used together with a swelling agent, e.g. methyl or ethyl alcohol, in order to enhance the penetration of the monomer into the wood. The resulting wood-plastic material may be treated with a solvent, e.g. benzene, to remove uncombined polymer from the composite material. Exemplified woods are spruce and maple. A particular use of the wood-plastic material is as resonance wood for making musical instruments, e.g. violins. Other applications are utilizable in construction, mechanical engineering, textile, shoe-making and shipbuilding industries, and in the construction of cooling towers.
