Abstract
1460485 Preparation of polysiloxane-polyether block copolymers; polyurethane foams UNION CARBIDE CORP 20 March 1974 12437/74 Headings C3R and C3T A polysiloxane-polyoxyalkylene block copolymer useful in making polyurethane foams is prepared by condensing a siloxane having at least one Si-bonded alkoxy group with a polyoxyalkylene polymer having at least one alcoholic OH group in the presence of a salt giving an apparent pH of 2À4-3À6 when 0À0033 moles of it are dissolved in 37 g. H 2 O and 48- 50 g. of C 4 H 9 (OC 2 H 4 ) 21 (OC 3 H 6 ) 16 OH; the reactants must make an at least partly compatible mixture, to which end solvents, e.g. toluene, benzene, xylene, heptane or octane, may be added. In the examples a polyether is condensed with a polysiloxane in toluene in the presence of the p-toluenesulphonate, dodecylbenzene sulphonate, or trifluoromethanesulphonate of pyridine, quinoline, diethylaniline, aniline, trioctylphosphine, or tridodecylamine. The block copolymers produced are incorporated in foams prepared from a propylene oxide, optionally with 14 wt. per cent ethylene oxide, adduct of glycerol and TDI, in the presence of water, tin dioctoate, trichlorofluoromethane and dimethyl ethanolamine or a triethylamine/ethyl morpholine mixture, and CFCl 3 .
