Abstract

1459521 Plastics bottles MONSANTO CO 11 Feb 1974 [12 Feb 1973] 06120/74 Heading B8D A blow moulded bottle for carbonated beverages is formed of a polymer in which the major constituent is polymerized acrylonitrile monomer and comprises an inset base 20 joined to a bottle side wall by a toroidal segment 18 of partcircular cross-section having a radius of curvature (R), which is 10 to 20% of the maximum diameter (D) of the bottle, Fig. 1 (not shown), and a surface area which is at least 30%, preferably 37%, of that of the full imaginary toroid 26 of which the segment forms a part, the polymer in at least part of the segment having an orientation release stress of at least 50 p.s.i. in both circumferential and axial directions with respect to the bottle. Forming of the toroidal segment during blow-moulding of the bottle from a parison, Fig. 1 (not shown), produces additional stretching of the plastics both outwardly and downwardly to induce these release stresses. The polymer comprises 60-80% by weight of polymerized acrylonitrile monomer and 40-20% by weight of at least one other monomer copolymerized therewith, various examples of which are specified. The polymer preferably comprises 65-75% weight of polymerized acrylonitrile and 35-25% weight of polymerized styrene. The maximum height 16 of the inset base above the lowermost surface of the segment is 5 to 30% of the maximum bottle diameter, and is preferably equal to the radius of curvature R plus the base thickness.
