Abstract
1459042 Polymeric coating compositions; laying roads IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 20 Feb 1975 [11 March 1974] 10688/74 Heading C3R [Also in Division E1] A method of laying roads or other metalled surfaces comprises mixing a filler material consisting substantially of particles of compact shape, which particles form classes of four different sizes, the proportions being such that the filler material occupies when mixed, at least 70% of the volume of the whole, with a polymerforming ingredient in a liquid state to form a coating of the liquid on the particles, laying and compacting the coated particles and thereafter impregnating the coated particles with a second polymer-forming ingredient capable of converting the first polymer-forming ingredient to a solid polymer at ambient temperatures. The polymer-forming ingredients are suitably those which form a polyurethane. Preferably the first polymer-forming ingredient is a polyhydroxyl compound or an isocyanate-ended polyurethane and the second ingredient is a polyisocyanate or chain extending compound respectively. In an example crushed granite is blended with a solution of oxypropylated tolylene diamine in methyl isobutyl ketone to form a coated aggregate which is formed into a layer and reacted with a solution of diphenylmethane diisocyanate in methyl isobutyl ketone. Limestone particles may replace the crushed granite.
