Abstract

1459025 Paints IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 15 April 1975 [19 April 1974] 17233/74 Headings C3B and C3R A paint composition which can be cleaned from an applicator in the presence of water comprises (a) a water-insoluble film-forming binder dissolved in a water-immiscible diluent, (b) an acidic pigment, extender, or filler having zero #-potential at pH <3À5, and (c) a surfactant which can form a stable emulsion of (a) in water. There may be 0À25-20% (c) based on (a); the proportion of (c) may be insufficient to emulsify the whole of (a). The binder may be an epoxy, polyester, vinyl or alkyd resin, optionally oilmodified, and optionally containing urethane or polyamide moieties resin. (b) May be prepared by coating a conventional pigment, e.g. with an alkyl silicate or SiCl 4 and hydrolysing, or with Na or K silicate and acidifying. Many pigments are specified. The diluent may be white spirit, or aromatic hydrocarbons, esters, or ketones. (c) May be non-ionic or ionic, e.g. poly(ethylene oxide), alkylphenol, Na dodecylbenzenesulphonate, poly(12-hydroxy-stearic acid)/poly- ethylene glycol ester. (c) May be incorporated immediately after preparation of a pigment mill-base.
