Abstract
1458556 Alkylating hydrocarbons TEXACO DEVELOPMENT CORP 26 April 1974 [14 May 1973 14 June 1973 18 June 1973] 18314/74 Heading C5E [Also in Division B1] Hydrocarbons are alkylated with olefins in the presence of a liquid alkylation catalyst comprising a liquid strong acid, e.g. H 2 SO 4 , and 0À0005 to 0À5 wt. per cent based thereon of a sulphonamide of formula R 1 SO 2 NHR 2 where R 1 is alkyl, aryl or alkaryl and R 2 is C 8 -C 20 alkyl. The process is particularly suited for the alkylation of isoparaffins, e.g. isobutane, isopentane or isohexane, with C 3 -C 5 olefins, e.g. propylene, butylene or isobutylene, to give hydrocarbons boiling in the gasoline range. The reaction may be carried out in the liquid phase at 10-150 psig and 0-150‹ F. using a isoparaffin to olefin mole ratio of 1 to 50 : 1. The sulphonamide may be N-(octadecyl)benzene-, N-(octadecyl)toluene-, or N-(octadecyl)methane sulphonamide and may be added as a solution in a hydrocarbon solvent also containing an alkyl phenol solubilizing agent. A particular form of such a solution forms the subject of Specification 1,458,557. The examples relate to the alkylation of isobutane with butene-2 or propylene to give C 5 -C 9 products rich in trimethylpentanes.
