Abstract

1458541 Transparent heterocyclic polyamides MONTEDISON SpA 15 March 1974 [15 March 1973] 11618/74 Heading C3A A linear thermostable solid polyamide has repeating units -CO-E-CO-Y- wherein Y is a radical derived from a primary aliphatic or secondary cyclic diamine or a diamine containing at least one cycloaliphatic or carbocyclic aromatic ring and E is an aromatic heterocyclic 5- or 6-membered ring other than a 1,2,5-thia- or oxa-diazole ring, which has 1 to 3 heteroatoms which are O and/or N and/or S, is unsubstituted or substituted by one or more methyl, phenyl or benzyl groups and may be fused with a benzene ring, and has the CO groups located ortho to each other. It may be obtained by condensing an acid dihalide E(COCl) 2 with a specified olefine by an interfacial or low or high temperature solution method. Numerous suitable acid dihalides, diamines, solvents and HHa acceptors are specified. The polymers are stated to be generally transparent with no well-defined melting point and a high Tg and to be useful for preparing cast films, wet-spun fibres, injection moulded or extruded articles, electrically insulating coatings, dies for compression and cast-moulding of composite systems containing fillers and fibres, and reverse osmosis membranes.
