Abstract

1458269 Recovering metals from slags KENNECOTT COPPER CORP 28 Feb 1974 [5 March 1973 (3)] 9091/74 Heading C7D A process for recovering Copper and Molybdenum, from ferro-silicate reverbertory furnace slags extracts the metals into a molten immiscible metal sulphide matte by treating the slag at 1200-1300‹C with a sulphide (FeS 2 ) and a reducing agent (carbon) in a multi-stage furnace reactor 10 in which the reactor charge is intimately mixed by an internally water cooled, metal bladed mechanically rotated stirrer 22. The iron to sulphur ratio is maintained between 9:1 to 2:1 preferably 2:1 to 3:1 for optimal metal recovery. The resultant slag and matte flow countercurrent, the latter being removed from the reactor at 11 where it is cooled and granulated by water sprays 30 prior to being oxidized at a high temperature in a roaster 32 where sulphur is removed. The roasted calcine is fed to acid or alkaline leaching centres 34 which dissolve the metal values, the Mo or Cu being recovered from the leach liquors by solvent extraction or precipitation. In an alternative embodiment a portion of the copper content of converter slag is extracted by reduction with carbonaceous material by rapid stirring in the reactor and removal of the copper matte as before. The residual slag is then treated to recover the Mo and Cu content as described above. The stirrer 22, which may be rotated at variable speeds and raised or lowered as required consists of a three blade water cooled assembly which is described and claimed in Divisional Specification 1458270.
