Abstract

1458213 Laminates DUNLOP Ltd 5 March 1974 [10 March 1973 18 Jan 1974] 11690/73 and 02392/74 Headings B5N and B5A An elastomer is adhered to a selected surface area of another material by applying to the material surface and/or to the surface of a curable elastomer a coating of a composition consisting of one or more component layers, the composition being an adhesive for the material and for the elastomer when the elastomer is cured in contact with the coating, exposing the non-selected surface area of the coating or, in the case of a multi component-layer adhesive, at least one component layer of the coating, to UV irradiation until the adherability of the non- selected area of the coating is reduced to the required level, and assembling the curable elastomer and the other material with the non- irradiated surface of the adhesive coating between them and then curing the elastomer. The other material may be a metal, e.g. steel, brass or aluminium, a plastics material, e.g. nylon, polyester, polypropylene, polyformaldehyde, polyvinyl chloride or a polymethylmethacrylate, a vulcanized rubber or wood. The elastomer may be applied to the other material by a compression-, transfer- or injection-moulding technique. The selected area of adhesive to which adhesion is required may be masked from the irradiation by an opaque stencil sheet or mask. The curable elastomer may be natural rubber, styrene/butadiene rubber, butadiene/acrylonitrile rubber, polychloroprene, ethylene/propylene rubber or ethylene/propylene/diolefin rubber. The adhesive may be a curable rubber, preferably chlorinated natural rubber, and may be applied to the surface of the other material by spraying, brushing or dipping. The surface of the other material may be pretreated, suitable treatments being an anti-corrosion phosphate coating for metals, UV irradiation, glow or corona discharge or acid treatment over the whole or part of the surface for plastics materials and treatment with acidified sodium hypochlorite solution for vulcanized rubber. Vehicle and machine suspensions, decorative panels, protective coatings and markings on articles are made.
