Abstract

1458188 Dyeing polymers for powder coating KODAK Ltd 26 Nov 1973 [29 Nov 1972] 55096/72 Headings C3F C3P and C3R A method of powder coating comprises dyeing a film-forming thermoplastic polymer powder by treatment with a solution or dispersion of a dyestuff at a temperature below the melting point of the powder, applying the dyed powder to a substrate and heating to fuse the powder. The dye may contain an -SO 2 N 3 , -CON 3 , -N 3 , -CHBr 2 or -CBr 3 group and the dyeing step may be followed by heating and/or washing. The dyed powder may be electrostatically sprayed on to a steel panel or aluminium foil. In examples: nylon 11 powder is dyed with solutions of the yellow dye of formula the blue dye of formula Brilliant Acid Blue G acid dye, and Eastman (Registered Trade Mark) Polyester Yellow 6GLSW disperse dye; polytetramethylene terephthalate and 1,4-cyclohexylene dimethylene terephthalate/isophthalate copolymer powders are dyed with Eastman Polyester Dark Red FL disperse dye; red PVC powder is dyed purple with Eastman Blue BNN disperse dye; and blue cellulose acetate butyrate powder is dyed turquoise with a dispersion of Eastman Fast Yellow 4RLF disperse dye.
