Abstract
1457890 Polymer-coated particles MONSANTO Ltd 28 Oct 1974 [28 Nov 1973] 55076/73 Heading C3R [Also in Divisions B1 and B2] A fluid-permeable material for use as a stationary phase in a chromatographic process, comprises particles of an inert material coated with an aromatic polymer, the polymer being cross-linked and one in which aromatic nuclei are linked to each other directly or through an oxygen, sulphur, carbon or silicon atom, at least some of the nuclei being linked directly. In Examples prepolymer is obtained by reacting terphenyls with benzene-1,3-disulphonyl chloride, sulphur dioxide and hydrogen chloride being evolved; the prepolymer is then crosslinked by reaction with further benzene-1,3- disulphonyl chloride; in one instance n-dodecylphenyl groups are introduced by including p-ndodecylbenzene sulphonyl chloride in the crosslinking reaction; the polymer is coated on kieselguhr and the coated particles are used in the chromatographic separation of terphenyls, polyphenyl ethers and polychlorinated biphenyls.
