Abstract

1457786 Graft polymers and compositions thereof DENKI KAGAKU KOGYO KK 17 May 1974 22148/74 Heading C3G A polymer is prepared by dissolving 2 to 15 parts by weight of a rubber in 98 to 85 parts of a mixture of styrene and methyl methacrylate and/or acrylonitrile, the ratio of said monomers being such as to produce a polymer having a refractive index which is substantially the same as that of said rubber, adding 0À02 to 0À2% by weight of the monomer mixture of an organic peroxide and conducting a bulk polymerization of the mixture at above 90‹ up to 130‹ C. until a polymerization conversion of 20 to 40% is achieved, and then adding a further 0À05 to 0À5% by weight of an organic peroxide and conducting a suspension polymerization at a temperature of 120‹ C. or higher substantially to completion of polymerization, n-dodecylmercaptan and/or t-dodecylmercaptan being present during the bulk and suspension polymerizations. The polymer is blended with a second graft polymer having a particle diameter of at least 40 m. micron and prepared by emulsion polymerization of 40 to 150 parts by weight of a mixture of styrene and methyl methacrylate and/or acrylonitrile on to 100 parts of a rubber. Examples are given in which styrene and methyl methacrylate are grafted onto styrene-butadiene rubber in bulk and suspension, using dicumyl peroxide as catalyst. The graft polymer is blended with styrene-butadiene rubber grafted in emulsion with styrene and methyl methacrylate.
