Abstract
1457784 Sterilization TOYO SEIKAN KAISHA Ltd 10 May 1974 [22 May 1973 (2)] 20798/74 Heading A2D A method of batch sterilization comprises charging sealed packages containing substances to be sterilized to a sterilizing tank, admitting steam thereto to heat sterilize said sealed packages, then for a period of time maintaining the interior temperature of said sterilizing tank by admitting further steam from the storage tank and subsequently admiting cooling water to the tank to facilitate the cooling of the sealed packages, wherein the steam that is admitted to the tank is generated in a heat storage tank which is heated by steam supplied by a boiler. Cooling may be carried out by admitting cooling water into upper and lower portions of the tank for a first period of time whilst admitting compressed air and then circulating the cooling water in the lower portion through the upper portion of the tank. The method may be carried out in the apparatus illustrated in the accompanying Figure, which comprises a sterilizing tank or retort 1, a storage tank 2, feed water tank 9 and compressor 17, these being interconnected by valve-controlled conduits in the manner shown. In operation, steam is supplied to storage tank 2 from main steam pipe 7 and steam generated in this tank is fed to retort 1. Exhaust valve V 4 permits displaced air to be discharged from the retort. In the ease of slow sterilization temperatures, compressed air may additionally be fed to the retort from compressor 17 via pipe 13. Sterilization may be terminated by closure of valve V 3 and simultaneously valve V 6-1 is partially opened to the sprinkle cooling water from above on to the sealed packages in retort 1. Compressed air may also be admitted at this stage. At a later stage in the cooling, valve V 6-1 is fully opened and valve V 6-2 is also opened to admit cooling water into the retort from the top and bottom thereof. Circulating pump P 2 may also be operated to circulate cooling water from the lower to the upper position of the retort. The retort may be filled completely with circulating cooling water.
