Abstract

1457556 Television INTERNATIONAL STANDARD ELECTRIC CORP 15 Feb 1974 [26 Feb 1973] 6945/74 Heading H4F In a differential pulse code modulation system for the transmission of picture information, if the difference between two compared signal sample values exceeds a predetermined magnitude then the difference between the present sample value and a value predicted (i.e. interpolated) from previous sample values is transmitted, this difference signal being added to a similarly predicted value at a receiver in response to a flag bit transmitted with the location and difference amplitude value bits forming the DPCM signal. In a standard DPCM transmitter, sample values of the video signal delayed by one sampling period by delay V1 are subtracted (Diff) from the input sample values, the differences being quantized (Qu), encoded (Cod), and combined with sync. code words generated G from separated (Au) sync. pulses in a transmitting circuit (Sk). As shown the output from delay V1 is fed back to adder (Su1) in the conventional manner. According to the invention if the difference output from quantizer (Qu) exceeds a predetermined magnitude as determined by a threshold circuit SW a gate circuit T is enabled to pass the sample output from adder Su1 and sample position information (from a counter Za) to a circuit VA which compares this sample magnitude information with corresponding sample information from the previous line (or picture) stored in store Sp. This sample information is then stored in the store Sp together with predicted sample information and associated flag bit for use in the next line (or picture). A location comparator circuit VP continuously compares the sample position information signal from counter Za with those stored in store Sp corresponding to predicted samples and when they agree a circuit St is actuated to switch contact u to pass the predicted sample value to the subtractor (Diff). A receiver is described with reference to Fig. 2 (not shown) in which the subtractor is replaced by an adder.
