Abstract

1457527 Safety belt IRVIN INDUSTRIES INC 14 Dec 1973 57947/73 Heading A3V [Also in Division H1] The belt paying out reel of a safety belt anchorage has a ratchet wheel 53 engageable by a pawl 85 biassed by a spring 94 towards the wheel but held away therefrom, to allow the paying out, by a first portion 103 of a member 87 which may be swung away about the reel spindle 48 by a solenoid 88 when an inertia switch (see Division H1) is closed by a change in vehicle movement. The pawl is provided with a belt follower 86 which, when sufficient belt has been wound back on to the reel after buckle release, abuts the belt to swing the pawl away from its reel and allow the portion 103 to re-engage the pawl. The switch (Figs. 5, 6, 9 and 10) may complete or break a circuit when movement change is sensed. A further switch is provided which either may be closed when the driver is seated or is an adjunct of the ignition switch.
