Abstract
1457386 Air conditioning units; refrigerating WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP 21 April 1975 [30 April 1974] 16361/75 Headings F4V and F4H An air conditioning unit disposes of condensate collected from an upper evaporator by centrifugally expelling it by means attached to the shaft or blades of a fan associated with a lower condenser either on to a plate about the outer periphery of the condenser or on to the inner periphery of the condenser for subsequent passage therethrough and evaporation thereon. As described, the unit comprises a housing 12, Fig. 1, enclosing an evaporator 20 which may be of arcuate or semicylindrical configuration in one compartment 16 above a cylindrical condenser 38 on a vertical axis in a lower second compartment 18, the axis being common to the rotational axis of the shaft 40 of a fan 48 which may be mounted above the condenser, as shown, to suck ambient air therethrough or mounted within the condenser to blow air through the condenser. The condensate is collected in a trough 22 formed in a partition wall 14 between the compartments and passed through a drain tube 54 to the shelf portion 52 of a flinger ring 50 attached to the lower edges of the fan blades 48 for centrifugal projection on to a vertical annular wall 44 encasing the condenser. The upper portion of the wall 44 forms a fan ring 46 and the lower portion has a projecting foot 47 in contact with the condenser fins to transfer condensate by gravity thereto. The condensate is thereafter sucked through the condenser in diagonal flow by the fan's influence for evaporation. In the embodiment of Fig. 2, a disc 60 is mounted on the fan shaft 40 to which the tube 54 directs the condensate for centrifugal discharge on to and through the condenser, which flow is aided by the fan's discharge. An annular ring 62 of porous material is attached to the outer periphery of the condenser to trap any condensate not deposited on the condenser to ensure complete evaporation of the condensate.
