Abstract

1457180 Orthopaedic traction apparatus S TAMNY and S R TAMNY 1 April 1974 [30 March 1973] 14384/74 Heading A5R A portable apparatus for the reduction of arm or leg fractures, e.g. as shown in Figure 1 a fracture of the forearm, whereby concurrent linear and rotational displacements may be applied to the fractured: limb segments, comprises a pair of parallel spaced apart frame sections 12a-12c and 12a-12c, the central frame sections 12a being elongated and frame sections 12b being tightly secured around the upper part of the arm by a buckle 15 and straps 14, 14a, tension and torsion being applied to the lower part of the arm via "Chinese fingers" 29 attached to a load distribution bar 32 by a cord 33 and rings 38, the bar being adjustably secured to the upper frame sections 12c. Tension is applied to the (bar 32 via a threaded rod 22 pivotally freely mounted on frame section 12c, the bar 32 being tensioned by tightening a nut 28 against an assembly 30 having therein helical springs, so that the amount of tension applied is indicated by the number of markings on null 28 that enter assembly 30. It is stated that the arrangement is self-aligning in, use, so that relative linear and rotational displacements are axiallydisposed to the lower part of the arm. The load distribution bar 32 is rotatable relative to frame sections 12c to apply torque to the lower part of the arm, indication of the amount of rotation being given on a protractor plate (50), Figure 2 (not shown) fixed relative to frame sections 12c by attachment to an arm 52a held therebetween. A locking arm (42) engages the left hand end of bar 32 and is securable to protractor plate (50) by a threaded knob 62 to maintain the desired rotation. To adapt the apparatus to the reduction of a fracture of the lower part of the leg, as shown in figure 10, the frame sections 12b are secured to the thigh, and tension and notation are applied to the, foot via a plaster cast 70 having embedded therein a metal plate 72. Plate 72 threadatbly engages eye-bolts 74 through which the cord 33 is threaded. To enable the patient to walk, a walking heed (80), Figure 11 (not shown) may be secured by bolts (82) to the plate 72 after the plaster cast 70 has set. An x-ray cassette of any size may be mounted to the apparatus in six different configurations by means of a mounting frame 130, Figure 7, the cassette being held therewithin by U-shaped channels 134 and (136), Figure- 8 (not shown) and thumb-screws 138. Mounting frame 130 is secured to either a leg 120a, or, as shown to a leg 120b, of a frame 120 adjustably mounted to frame. section 12a by a member 122, clamping plate 112, bar 116 and screw 114 The frame 120 may be reversed relative to the plane of symmetry of frame section 12a, and mounting frame 130 may be secured in positions 90‹ apart on legs 120a, 120b by the legs engaging grooves (.142), (144) formed on one surface of frame 130.
