1456970 Measuring caster and camber of vehicle wheels A ROME GmbH 15 Sept 1975 [16 Sept 1974] 37871/75 Heading G1X The camber and caster angles of a vehicle wheel are measured by a device comprising a body 4, a spirit level 14 pivotally mounted thereon about an axis which, in use, is parallel with the plane of the wheel, and a manually rotatable member whose rotation is arranged to pivot the level. A stationary caster scale 26 is carried by the body 4, and a camber scale rotates with the rotatable member. An indicator 22 is rotatable at choice relative to or together with the rotatable member, and extends to the caster scale 26. As described, the rotatable member comprises a knob 20 and threaded spindle 28, a disc 24 carrying the camber scale also being rigidly mounted on the rotatable member. A head 40 co-operates with the screw thread of spindle 28 to pivot a lever 42 about spindle 44, a spring 46 forcing a carrier 16 for the level 14, which is mounted for pivotal movement about the spindle 44, against an adjustment screw 18 carried by the lever 42. A spring washer 32 in a groove 34 of knob 20 frictionally engages the indicator 22 with the disc 24. A peg 8 engages within an aperture in a jig Fig. 3 (not shown), that is secured to the vehicle wheel by clamps, screws, spring clips, or magnets. The camber angle is obtained by turning knob 20, and hence scale disc 24, until the bubble of level 14 is centred. The zero mark 60 then indicates the camber on scale disc 24 (2‹ 30' as shown). The caster angle is obtained by centering the bubble as above for the wheel turned approximately twenty degrees outwards, turning the indicator 22, but not the disc 24 to point to mark 60, and then turning the wheel inwards by twenty degrees. Rotation of the knob 20, and hence disc 24 and indicator 22, until bubble is centred allows the indicator to give the caster angle on scale 26 (+ 6‹ as shown).
