1456853 Hydrogenation of fatty esters UNILEVER Ltd 20 Feb 1974 [22 Feb 1973] 8623/73 Heading C5C [Also in Division B1] The hydrogenation of fatty materials, e.g. acids, esters or alcohols and, in particular, the selective hydrogenation of polyunsaturated fatty acids such as linolenic and linoleic acids to give mono-unsaturated acids may be carried out using a supported nickel catalyst prepared by a method involving precipitation of nickel hydroxide from aqueous solution containing a water-insoluble organic base and an inorganic base which is a stronger base than the organic base and then reducing the nickel hydroxide (see Division B1). In the examples a whale oil of sulphur content 30 p.p.m. is treated at 175 C. and a hydrogen flow rate of 60 1./h. and a soybean oil is treated at 100 C. and a hydrogen flow rate of 60 1./h. to give products of specified refractive index.
