1456831 Splints T J SMITH & NEPHEW Ltd 9 Jan 1974 [9 Oct 1972] 46414/72 Heading A5R [Also in [Division B8] A structure comprising a gas absorbable particulate material in a gas impervious container, e.g. a plastics bag, is rigid at low temperature at which the gas present in the container is absorbed and flexible at a higher temperature at which the gas is desorbed. Using as container an elongate plastics bag a structure is formed which will droop under gravity if it becomes warm, e.g. owing to a fire in its vicinity and may be used as a temperature sensing device such as a water-sprinkler fire protection system. The structure may also be used in medicine as a temporary splint for operations or casualty use. The rigid structure may be made flexible by puncturing the container and allowing ingress of air as well as by heating.
