Abstract

1456721 Removing solids from suspensions by electro-phoretic migration and electro-osmotic consolidation ACRES CONSULTING SERVICES Ltd 20 Jan 1975 [7 Jan 1974] 648/74 Heading C7B Suspended solids are removed from an aqueous suspension, e.g. a ceramic slurry to produce castings from clay slips, by introducing a layer of the suspension between two generally plane parallel electrodes of an electrode assembly, applying an electrical potential across the electrodes low enough to preclude electrolysis but sufficient to cause electro-phoretic migration of the solids to one electrode and electro-osmotic consolidation of the solids at the one electrode, and separating the solids accumulating at the one electrode. The electrode assembly 8, e.g. comprising a heavy gauge open Ni wire mesh anode 2 separated from a light gauge fine steel wire mesh cathode 4, includes collapsible insulating spacer means, e.g. flexible plastics tubes 6 secured to the meshes by tie loops 10, and is freed from accumulations of solids by collapsing the spacer means e.g. by evacuating the tubes 6 to squeeze out the solids. The tubes may be replaced by expanded plastics mesh or non-woven mat of bonded resilient fibres, and the electrodes by welded, woven or expanded metal. The electrodes 2, 4 are preferably separated by ¢ to 1 inch and maintained at a PD of 2 to 5 volts. The electrode assembly may be in the form of a belt to convey the consolidated solids away from the separation zone. As shown Fig. 1 a plurality of electrode belts 44 arranged one within another are supported by rollers 40, 42 on arms 36, 38 projecting from buoyancy chamber 34 inter-connected with buoyancy chambers 32 floating on a pond or tank surface of the suspension. Electric power is supplied through brush skid or roller contact 46. Solids pressed out in zone 50 are scraped off by blade 48 and collected in belt conveyer 52; the belts are then washed by spray heads 54. Intermittent operation is preferred.
