Abstract

145,667. Hoover Suction Sweeper Co., (Assignees of Hoover, H. E.). July 14, 1916, [Convention date]. Capillary-action lubricating.-A hollow vertical shaft of a suction-cleaner motor &c. has means for preventing excess lubricant from being seattered upon the. surrounding mechanism or from running to waste both while the shaft is rotating and at rest. Lubricant is supplied through an aperture G in an end-yoke A<2> to the hollow shaft B<1>, which contains a wick J<3> to retard the flow, an armature B being mounted on the shaft. A permeable disk G<2>, secured between an upper bearing-sleeve D and the yoke A<2>, acts as a distributor for the lubricant, part of which passes through the shaft and an opening M to a lower bearing-sleeve E, whence it passes into a dust chamber C, from which it is carried away with the dust-laden air by a fan C<3> secured to the shaft. A part of the lubricant passes along the upper bearing-surface into a cup J, secured to the shaft and adapted to retain the lubricant when rotating. When rotation is stopped, this oil passes along channels J<2> to the interior of the shaft. The sleeve D rests on a flange B<2> of the shaft, with intermediate packing, but, in a modification, the cup J may rest on the flange, and the sleeve D and packing rest on the cup, grooves being provided in the base of the cup to communicate with the channels J<2>.
