Abstract
1456410 Olefin polymerization catalyst BASF AG 19 Dec 1974 [21 Dec 1973] 54853/74 Addition to 1456408 Heading C3P An olefin polymerization catalyst comprises (A) an organoaluminium, -zinc or -magnesium compound and (B) a titanium component obtained by (i) reacting, in suspension, a metal salt of a CH-acid organic compound of formula where M is magnesium or manganese, R<SP>1</SP> is CN, COR<SP>3</SP> or COOR<SP>4</SP>, R<SP>2</SP> is COR<SP>3</SP>, COOR<SP>4</SP> or phenyl, R<SP>3</SP> is alkyl, alkyl phenyl or phenyl and R<SP>4</SP> is alkyl, with an organoaluminium compound, and (ii) reacting, in suspension, the solid product of (i) with a reaction product of the formula TiZ q (OQ) 4-q , where Z is halogen, Q is hydrocarbyl, and q is 1 to 2À5. The titanium halo-hydrocarbyloxide is obtainable by simply mixing compounds of formulae TiZ 4 and Ti(OQ) 4 in the ratio q : 4-q. Specified salt compounds are the magnesium salts of acetoacetic acid ethyl ester, acetylacetone, malonic acid diethylester, benzylcyanide and dibenzoylmethane. Examples refer to the homopolymerization of ethylene in a polyethylene bed or in isobutane in the presence of hydrogen and of a catalyst comprising (A) AliBu 3 , AlEt 3 or Al(C 8 H 17 ) 3 and (B) (i) the reaction product of the Mg salt of acetoacetic acid ethyl ester or of acetylacetone and AlEt 2 Cl, followed by reaction with (ii) TiCl q (OiPr) 4-q , where q = 1À25, 1À62, 2 or 2À44, TiCl q (On-Bu) 4-q , where q = 2 or 1À33, or TiCl 2 (Oi-Bu) 2 .
