Abstract

1456277 Stabilizing polyurethane foams with cyanoalkyl modified siloxanes UNION CARBIDE CORP 21 Jan 1974 [22 Jan 1973] 02665/74 Headings C3R C3S and C3T High resilience polyether urethane foams are prepared by foaming and reacting a mixture comprising: (I) an organic polyol which is either (A) a polyether triol in which at least 40 mole per cent of the hydroxyl groups are primary hydroxy groups and having a molecular weight of from 2000 to 8000 or (B) a mixture of the said polyether triol and at least one other polyether having an average of at least two hydroxyl groups, wherein the polyether triol comprises at least 40 weight per cent of the total polyol content; (II) an organic polycyanate, (III) a blowing agent; (IV) a polyurethane catalyst; and (V) a foam stabilizing amount of a cyanoalkyl modified siloxane fluid having the average formula wherein x is 1 to 6 inclusive, y is 0 to 6 inclusive, z is 0 to 1 inclusive, R denotes C 1-4 alkyl or phenyl, X denotes -(O) n R<SP>1</SP>CN, n is 0 or 1, R<SP>1</SP> denotes C 2-4 alkylene, the said siloxane containing at least one of the cyanoalkyl values of X and having an average molecular weight in the range of from 400 to 1500. A further aspect of the invention is a novel composition comprising at least 5 parts by weight of the above siloxane fluid per 95 parts by weight of a solvent consisting of an organic polyether of a mono-ol, diol or triol hydroxy compound, or a mixture thereof. The above composition may further contain a polyurethane catalyst. Uses.-The polyurethane foams may be used as cushioning, carpeting or packaging material.
