Abstract
1455781 Carboxylic acids and esters SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ BV 7 Jan 1974 [8 Jan 1973] 00679/74 Heading C2C Carboxylic acids and their esters are prepared by contacting an alcohol in the liquid phase with carbon monoxide at elevated temperature and pressure in the presence of a cobalt/iodide containing catalyst which also comprises a platinum containing promoter. Aliphatic alcohols preferably primary or secondary alkanols, and compounds such as ethers, halides and esters which revert to alcohol under the reaction conditions, are used. The cobalt constituent may be in the form of a salt, e.g. cobalt iodide, and the iodide constituent may be as free iodine or iodine compounds. The platinum constituent may be as an inorganic or organic compound or as a complex with a ligand, many of which are listed. Examples describe the preparation of methyl acetate and acetic acid from methanol using cobalt iodide and platinum compounds, e.g. chloroplatinic acid as catalysts. Ethyl propionate, octanoic acid and heptyl alcohol, and t-butyl pivalate are also prepared.
