Abstract

1455741 Hair sprays, lacquers and wavesetting lotions BASF AG 2 April 1974 [3 April 1973] 14482/74 Heading A5B [Also in Divisions C3 and C4] Neutralised copolymers produced by the copolymerisation of (a) 60-95% by weight of at least one vinyl ester of an aliphatic carboxylic acid of 2-5 carbon atoms per carboxylic acid radical (e.g. vinyl acetate, propionate or nburynate), (b) 2-20% of at least one α-ethylenically unsaturated aliphatic carboxylic acid of 3-6 carbon atoms (crotonic or acrylic acids, or monoesters of maleic acid) and (c) 1-20% of at least one monoester of acrylic and/or methacrylic acid with alkylene glycols of 2-6 carbon atoms in the alkylene glycol radical (hydroxypropyl acrylate or butanediol monoacrylate) in the presence of a free-radical initiator (specified), followed by neutralization of the resulting copolymer with 0.2 to 1.0 mole equivalents of ammonia or specified organic bases per mole of free carboxyl groups in the copolymer, are useful as an ingredient of aerosol hair sprays, hair lacquers and wavesetting lotions. An aerosol hair spray comprises 1-5% by weight of the neutralised copolymer in a mixture of 25-35 parts of anhydrous ethanol or isopropanol and 65-75 parts of propellant e.g. fluorinated hydrocarbon. A wavesetting lotion comprises 1-3% of the neutralised copolymer in a 20-50% aqueous/alcohol solution based on ethanol or isopropanol. The hair preparations may also contain plasticizers, perfumes, dyes and other conventional additives.
