1455727 Well packer SCHLUMBERGER TECHNOLOGY CORP 20 Nov 1973 [24 Nov 1972] 53809/73 Heading E1F A drillable well packer 10 for use in squeeze cementing operations is run in with a setting tool 11 to which it is connected by upper slips 41, the setting tool including a valve operator 26 extending into the packer mandrel 30 to control movement of a valve sleeve 56 relative to ports 55. When the packer reaches the required downhole location, the tubing string is rotated to the right so that jack threads 23 feed drag assembly 19 and slip retainer sleeve 15 upwards whereby the sleeve 15 moves clear of upper slips 41 and the cage 20 allows detent 18 to disengage the setting tool mandrel 13, the latter then being raised to cause lugs 70 on the operator 26 to abut shoulder 74 (Fig. 3) of mandrel 30 so that the latter is raised to set the upper and lower slips 41, 37 and the packing elements 34, the packer mandrel being held in the set position by ratchet ring 50. The operator 26 is suspended from the setting tool mandrel 13 by a swivel (25) and has a series of connecting channels 82-89 (Fig. 4) cooperable with pins 81 to index the operator angularly during axial reciprocation thereof so that shoulders 94, 96 (Fig. 5) on the operator can be moved to positions at which they can cooperate with lugs 65 of the valve sleeve to allow the latter to be moved between open and closed positions as the operator is moved axially. When the operator is first introduced into the mandrel 30 upon assembly of the setting tool with the packer, lands 101 cooperate with pins 81 to orientate the operator so that lugs 65, 70 are aligned with channels 91, 92 and 72, 73 respectively, and the shoulders 96 engage the lugs 65 and shift the valve sleeve to its open position, the downward movement of the operator being arrested by abutment of its enlarged head 27 with the top of the packer mandrel, by which time the pins 81 have moved into channels 83 and the operator has been indexed angularly so that when it is moved upwards during the above setting sequence the pins 81 move into the channels 85 and the valve sleeve will have been raised to a closed position by abutment of shoulders 94 with lugs 65, the upward travel of the operator being arrested by abutment of the lugs 70 with shoulders 74 as described above. When the operator is next depressed, the pins 81 enter channels 84 and the operator is indexed to its next angular position in which the lugs 65 enter recesses 95 so that the valve sleeve does not follow the downward movement of the operator. After conducting a pressure test, the operator is raised and the pins 81 enter channels 82, 82' and index the operator so that the lugs 65, 70 align with channels 91, 92 and 72, 73 respectively, allowing the operator to be withdrawn from the packer mandrel leaving the valve sleeve in a closed position. To reopen the valve to allow cement to pass out through the ports 55, the operator is simply reintroduced into the packer mandrel and the valve sleeve is depressed as described above. During the subsequent reciprocation required to permit withdrawal of the operator, the sleeve will be returned to its closed position. In the embodiment shown, the valve sleeve is keyed to the packer mandrel by a pin 63, but in a modification the sleeve is freely rotatable. In each case, the use of a valve sleeve located in the mandrel improves the drillability, the thickness of the sleeve being uniform since it experiences uniform radial loading.
