Abstract

1455421 Heat shrinkable elastomeric articles EXXON RESEARCH & ENG CO 19 June 1974 [20 July 1973] 34611/73 Heading C3P Heat-shrinkable elastomeric articles are prepared by a process in which a blend of an EPDM elastomer and a thermoplastic resin in a weight ratio of 90 : 10 to 50 : 50 is mixed and fluxed and compounded with a filler, a plasticizer and a curative, and the blend is (i) simultaneously or successively shaped and cured, (ii) the cured blend is heated to a temperature above the melting point of the thermoplastic resin, (iii) the heated blend is deformed and (iv) the blend in the deformed state is cooled to a temperature below the metling point of the thermoplastic resin. The resin may be a polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, polyvinyl chloride or polyvinyl acetate. The filler may be carbon black, silica, a silicate, clay or whiting. The plaxticizer may be a naphthenic or paraffinic mineral oil. Pigments, e.g. titanium dioxide may also be present, and the blends shaped into sheets, strips, tubes, rods or sections Uses include heat shrinkable tyres, O-rings, tubular sleeves and straps, thermoformed and vacuum-formed articles and forgings. In examples blends of EPDM rubbers, polyethylenes, clay, whiting, carbon black, paraffinic process oil, stearic acid, zinc oxide and curing agents are formed into strips and tubes which are stretched and cooled, and into presscured pods which are thermoformed on cold moulds into shaped articles which revert to the cured blanks on heating.
