Abstract

1455233 Grinding and polishing lenses SOC CMV 27 March 1975 [29 Nov 1974] 12904/75 Heading B3D A device for grinding and polishing toroidal and spherical workpieces comprises a workpiececarrying spindle 20 and a tool-carrying spindle 22 which are arranged parallel and end-to-end to each other, a synchronization shaft 12 which is parallel to the spindles, motor means 10 for rotating the shaft; means 28, 38 for transmitting rotation of the shaft to both the spindles thereby to drive them synchronously with one another, an oscillatable arm 34 one end of which is mounted to oscillate on the shaft and the other end of which supports one of the spindles to cause oscillation thereof about the shaft, and means for oscillating the arm. The shaft 12 is driven by a belt 14 from a main motor 10 and the transmission means between the shaft 12 and spindles 20, 22 consists of notched belts 28, 38. The spindle 22 has a tool carrying device 24, 24, and the spindle 20 has a rocking device 46 having pins 48, 50 for engaging apertures in a workpiece support 44. The spindle 20 is mounted in one end of the arm 34 which is oscillatable about the shaft 36 by a connecting rod 52 driven by an eccentric 56 of a secondary motor 58. Mechanical, pnuematic or hydraulic means 60 applies axial pressure to the spindle 20 for pressing the workpiece against the tool. The oscillating arm may support the tool and the axial pressure may be applied to either one of the spindles.
