Abstract

1455151 Shoots W R GRACE & CO 6 Feb 1974 [7 Feb 1973] 5944/73 Heading B8S [Also in Division G1] Skirted closures 3a-f pass from a feed hopper (not shown) downwardly in a shoot 5 and on to a sorting track 6 where the closures are rotated about their axes of symmetry (viz. that axis which extends perpendicular to the end wall of a closure) so that perfectly formed closures pass from a track under a cover plate 8 to be fed to another part of the processing line, while malformed closures which have at least one diameter which is less than the required diameter of a closure, or undersized closures, are caused to fall through the gap (12) between the plates 7a, b forming the track 6, Fig. 2 (not shown), to be subsequently discarded. A feed wheel 1, which rotates about a shaft 4, has resiliently mounted fingers 2 which each engage a closure to feed it along the track 6, and the side plate 7a has serrations 9 formed on its upper surface in the region between the planes A, B, the engagement between the serrations 9 and undulations formed on the closure skirts causing anticlockwise rotation of the closures in the region between the planes A and B, while the side plate 7b has serrations 10 formed thereon in the region between the planes B and C which cause clockwise rotation of the closures. The cover plate 8 strips the closures from the feed wheel fingers 2. The side plates 7a, b may be replaced by wires in which serrations are formed.
