Abstract
1454995 Screwing-up machines RUSSELL AUTOFEED Ltd 13 Nov 1973 [11 Nov 1972] 52178/72 Heading B3N A machine for driving a thread fastener, e.g. a screw 18, into engagement with a workpiece comprises a power driven rotary screw driver 16 for drivingly engaging the screw 18, a mechanism for advancing and retracting the screw driver 16 along its axis, feed means 20 for feeding a screw 18 into the path of advancement of the screw driver, and a nozzle assembly 19, including a gripping means, for holding a screw by spring biased jaws whilst the screw driver is advanced into driving engagement therewith, and being characterized in that the said mechanism initially advances the screw driver relative to the stationary nozzle assembly to ensure that the screw driver 16 is drivingly engaged with the screw 18 before the said screw is moved into engagement with the workpiece. The screw driver is rotated by a belt driven shaft 14 through a torque slipping device 12. The shaft 14, device 12 and screwdriver 16 are carried in a housing 25 attached to a base plate 36 which is slidable on a base 38 by a pneumatic jack 39. The jack drive passes through a spring 41 to a collar 42 attached to the base plate 36 so that when movement is stopped by engagement of the screw with the workpieee continued movement of the jack engages a probe 59 with a micro-switch 60 to initiate a a return stroke. The nozzle assembly 19 is mounted on a carrier 26 for independent sliding movement controlled by a rod 30. During initial movement of the housing 25 to advance the screw driver 16 a spring 47 biases the rod 30 against a fixed machine member 51 to hold the nozzle assembly 19 stationary to allow the screw driver to engage the screw. Eventually a bush 35 engages the end of the spring at collar 48 to release the bias and allow the rod 30 and nozzle assembly to advance to the workpiece. When the screw driver is advanced into the nozzle assembly 19, and at the end of the stroke of the jack 39, an end 65 of a trip lever 62 engages behind a stop 64 to retract the nozzle assembly 19 on to the screw driver until its end protrudes from the delivery nozzle 24 to ensure ejection of a screw 18. The machine may be used to screw internally threaded parts on to bolts and studs.
