Abstract

1454954 Change-speed control BRITISH LEYLAND UK Ltd 17 April 1975 [21 Feb 1974] 8019/74 Heading F2D Engagement pressure between synchronizer cones 13, 14 during manual ratio shift is augmented by electromagnetic force controlled by a load sensor 23 between the selector lever 11 and a rod 12 to which the cone is connected by a fork 10. A solenoid 20 through which the rod is slidable is flanked by a pair of plungers 17, 18 fixed to the rod and carrying conical spring washers 19. As the rod is moved leftwardly the spring 19 on the plunger 18 engages and displaces the solenoid until, on increased loading on the rod as the cones 13, 14 engage, the sensor 23 energizes the solenoid through a controller 24 causing the solenoid to become anchored in a ferromagnetic, e.g. mild steel, sleeve 15 and the plunger 18 to be drawn leftwardly, compressing the spring 19. On completion of synchronization the solenoid is deenergized and the synchronizer is positively engaged by the final part of the movement of the lever 11. The plunger 17 is operative on another synchronizer (not shown) actuated by rightward movement of the rod. The load sensor 23 may alternately be in the lever 11. Also, the lever 11 may incorporate means for disengaging a transmission clutch when it is grasped by the driver.
