Abstract

1454497 Radial tracking arm EMI Ltd 3 Dec 1973 [8 Dec 1972] 56758/72 Heading G5R In a gramophone in which a driven carriage 1 guides a stylus 16 along a radial path 18 on record 19, a self compensating arrangement is provided to ensure the carriage is driven at the same speed as the stylus moves along its radial path. The stylus is supported on a T-shaped pick up arm 2 which is pivotally mounted 3 on carriage 1. The carriage is driven along a linear path by belt 5 passing over a pair of oppositely directed frusto-conical drums 6, 7, at least one of which is driven. The pick up arm has a pair of arms 9, 10 having slotted turned down ends 11, 12 which engage the belt. Should the speed of movement of the stylus drop below that of the carriage the pick up arm pivots anti-clockwise whereby the arms 9, 10 exert a side pressure on the belt to move this to a lesser diameter part of the conical drums thus reducing the speed of the carriage. The converse happens when the speed of movement of the stylus is greater than that of the carriage. A photo-electric playback and pick up position detector arrangement is also described.
