Abstract

1454386 Signal lamps GEC-ELLIOTT TRAFFIC AUTOMATION Ltd 10 Dec 1974 [10 Dec 1973] 57226/73 Heading F4R In a traffic signal device, phantom signals are prevented by an electro-optical shutter arrangement which operates when the signal is switched off. The shutter may be an array of liquid crystal cells electrically interconnected or a single large cell, located between the reflector and the lens, optionally combined with the lens. Where two or more signal lamps are mounted on a common head, the current to a lamp which is switched on also provides the field which changes the cells of the other lamps from a translucent to an opaque state. In an alternative embodiment, the signal lamp is permanently on, the signal being switched on and off by the shutter arrangement.
