Abstract

1454180 Separating hydrocarbons using adsorbents BRITISH PETROLEUM CO Ltd 18 April 1975 [11 April 1974] 16139/74 Addition to 1313859 Heading C5E n-Paraffins are separated from a feed, boiling in the gas oil or kerosene range and containing non-straight chain hydrocarbons and 1000 p.p.m.-2% by weight of sulphur by an adsorption-desorption process using a bed of 5Š molecular sieve which has been pretreated by contacting with hydrogen at a temperature of at least 300‹ C. but below its degradation temperature. The pretreatment can be carried out at up to 650‹ C. at a hydrogen flow rate of 50-200 v./v./hr. for 0À5-48 hours, e.g. at 15 p.s.g.; the pretreatment improves the initial working capacity and the decay rate of the sieve. Examples illustrate the separation of n-paraffins from a 238-284‹ C. gas oil containing 9000 p.p.m. sulphur and consisting of C 11-18 hydrocarbons of which 19À3% are nparaffins. The separation can be carried out according to the procedures used in Specifications 944,441, 1,026,116 and 1,110,494.
