1453823 Measuring pressure electrically LUCAS INDUSTRIES Ltd 8 Oct 1973 [12 Oct 1972] 47073/72 Heading G1N [Also in Division H1] An electromagnet comprises, Fig. 1 (not shown) an annular gapped core with a winding producing a radial field in the gap to draw an annular armature thereinto with a force varying with ambient temperature; the armature and core being of materials e.g. soft iron and nickel iron having differing coefficient of thermal expansion, to apply differing forces at differing temperatures; and the device being applicable to a force balance fluid-pressure transducer wherein a fluid bellows subject to thermal expansion acts on a lever against an electromagnetic force applied thereto. The energization is controlled in response to deflections of the lever to achieve balance. A pair of such electromagnets 20, 21 Fig. 2 have armatures 20a, 21a bearing on lever 22 in opposite directions and have double windings; one of each being constantly polarized and the others being series oppositely connected to apply unbalanced deflections to the lever to counterbalance the force applied by flexible resilient evacuated bellows 23 subject to external pressure to be measured. Thermal expansion increases the force on the lever with temperature for a given pressure, and accurate choice of gap and armature proportions and core and armature materials produce linear response; the lever position being capacitively sensed at 24 to control the excitation current of the magnets over circuit 25. The direction of compensation is reversible by making the armature of nickel iron and the core of soft iron.
