1453599 Display devices; road traffic signs H F RYDSTROM 23 Nov 1973 [24 Nov 1972 29 Oct 1973] 54458/73 Headings G5C and G4Q An image display device, such as a roadsign, has an array of elements 101 pivoted at 102 and having a colour or display fragment in contrast to a background 105, the elements being settable to a horizontal position exposing background 105 by relay actuated air-stream setting means 106, in which position the elements are held by the electrostatic attraction of arresting electrodes 103 and insulators 104. To reveal the display sign, electrodes 103 are discharged to pivots 102, and elements 101 fall under gravity to a vertical position. In another form, elements 101 may selectively display either face and are deflected by air-jets to either side of a vertical equilibrium position under gravity. The elements may be held in the deflected position by an electrostatically operated mechanical catch. Again, remotely controlled handwriting display is possible using the selective discharge of electrostatic arresting electrodes. A small spacer lug between elements and insulators reduces air drag when an element is released.
