Abstract
1453526 Welding by fusion INST ELEKTRO IM EO PATONA AKAD NAUK UKRAIN SSR 18 Sept 1974 40648/74 Heading B3R [Also in Divisions G1 and G3] The depth of fusion in electron beam welding is controlled by deriving a signal proportional to the scattering of beam electrons due to interaction with metal vapour produced by welding, filtering the signal to obtain a component with a frequency of over 200 c/s, and using the component to control the welding heat input. The method is used in a welding apparatus comprising an electron gun 1 producing a beam 7 which is automatically focused by a coil 6 and unit 8 to give a constant size hot spot on the workpiece 9. The gun comprises a cathode 3, control grid 4 and anode 5, and the whole apparatus is in a vacuum chamber 2. A beam trap 11 collects scattered electrons and produces a signal across resistor 12. A filter 13 blocks the passage of D.C. and frequencies below 200 c/s, and the signal is then amplified, rectified and smoothed before feeding to an indicator or recorder Q and a comparator 17. The latter also receives a reference signal from a source 18 which is adjustable or may vary to give a changing weld depth. The output of the comparator is amplified and fed to the grid 4 to reduce the welding power input if the scatter current is increasing, and vice versa. The recorder Q may be a chart recorder driven at the speed of the workpiece relative to the beam so that a defective weld portion may be quickly located by laying the chart over the weld. It is stated that weld quality is improved if the beam is periodically removed from the workpiece at the frequency of the selected component of the scatter current signal. This may be achieved by use of a further signal fed to an additional beam deflection coil (24, Fig. 5, not shown) or to the grid 4. The further signal is produced by a generator (21) and comprises pulses of a duration determined by the output of the comparator 17 and synchronized with the leading edges of the half waves produced by amplifier 14.
