Abstract

1453401 Light guides PIRELLI GENERAL CABLE WORKS Ltd 20 March 1975 [20 March 1974] 12466/74 Heading G2J A communications cable 1 or 1a (e.g. as described in Specification 1453402) comprises a plurality of optical fibres 2, 2a each having a liquid core, a pair of caps (not shown) sealing opposite ends of the cable and having respective chambers with which the opposite ends of the optical fibres communicate, and a quantity of the same liquid as the cores filling the chambers under pressure. In the arrangement shown, the end of cable 1 is provided with sockets formed by capillary tubes 9 into which the fibres 2 extend halfway and are secured by resin 11. The fibres 2a of cable 1a extend from capillary tubes 9a, however, so that to join cables 1, 1a together, the end caps (not shown) are removed from each cable, the ends of fibres 2a are inserted into the capillary tube sockets 9 and the jointing zone is enclosed e.g. by sleeves 17, 18. During the joining, core liquid is pumped through the optical fibre cores from the remote ends of the cables.
