Abstract

1453103 Animal scares SIERRA RESEARCH CORP 13 March 1974 11127/74 Heading A1E [Also in Divisions H3 and H4] Apparatus for generating and radiating ultrasonic sound, e.g. for disturbing pests such as rodents, uses a piezoelectric element 20 (Figs. 1, 3) having opposite main electrodes 27, 28 and a feedback electrode 29. An inductance 60 forms with the capacity between electrodes 27, 28 a tuned circuit. An oscillator 38, 40 (as described a Darlington oscillator) is coupled across the element 20. The feedback electrode 29 of piezoelectric element 20 is coupled to the control electrode of transistor 38 regeneratively to sustain oscillations of the oscillator 38, 40. The oscillator is switched on and off at intervals of about one second by a square wave circuit in the form of an integrated circuit 34 which controls the oscillator 38, 40 through a drive transistor 36. The frequency radiated is about 19, 20, 22 or 24 KHz and is determined by choice of the element 20. Several adjacent units as described may be provided and different frequencies in adjacent units produce beat frequencies having high peak powers. Different frequencies at independently controlled rates are particularly effective. The timing of the on/off square wave is determined by the value of resistor 42. A neon lamp 72 in parallel with the piezoelectric element 20 is illuminated by power from the resonant circuit and also indicates failure of the apparatus. The apparatus is suspended by a wire 10 from the ceiling. A cylindrical housing 12 contains circuit components and supports a reflector dish 14 having a guard grille 16. The piezoelectric element 20 is located on the reflector dish 14 and is held by three nylon clamps (25) Fig. 2 (not shown) having interposed rubber cushions (26). The power transistor 40 of the oscillator is in heat sink relationship with the reflector dish 14 and is central relative to element 20. An on/off pull cord 18 and switch (15) are provided. The neon lamp 72 is within the reflector dish 14.
